'True Blood' Recap:Season 4, Episode 9

'True Blood' Recap:Season 4, Episode 9

Sookie's gunshot wound goes away. Like immediately, during the credits somehow, she gets better. It is cheap and stupid and tells you exactly how dumb the episode is going to be. Alcide and Bill are crying and praying, she's bleeding out, the song plays, and then they're like, "Thank goodness you got better, Sookie."

Also what went away is the Witch War. I guess everybody got bored, or their moms started yelling for them from the porch, but either way it just abruptly ends about five minutes into it. There don't seem to have been noticeable casualties, either, since we see most of the people later in the episode. What a dumb Witch War.

Britney Spears' VMA Promo: Go Behind The Scenes!

Promo reflects on Brit's career and inspirations while looking ahead to August 28 awards show.
By Christina Garibaldi

On Thursday (August 11), Britney Spears took over MTV when her Video Music Awards promo made its debut and MTV News was there when she filmed it.

The 30-second promo interlaces Spears' latest hit "I Wanna Go" with her own "Slave 4 U," Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" and Madonna's "Everybody" as dancers dressed in Brit's most-famous outfits crowd around her. There's also a nod to Michael Jackson, with a poster on the wall that says "Billy Jean," in reference to MJ's hit "Billie Jean," and a dancer who mimics the late King of Pop's iconic moves. At the end of the promo, Spears stands in front of a wall that cryptically reads "A Tribute to Britney Spears" before the date of the VMAs — 8.28 — flashes on the screen.

Spears, whose "Till the World Ends" is nominated for Best Pop Video and Best Choreography, filmed the promo last month in Miami, and MTV News was on the set for a behind-the-scenes look.

"The general concept of what we are going for is basically called 'The Muse Factory,' " director Jahai Brightly explained. "It's where all your favorite artists that are going to be at the Video Music Awards this year meet and explore their influences and inspirations."

The promo pulls from Spears' own musical influences from over the years, which is portrayed through the set design, wardrobe and, of course, through Brit herself.

In the promo, Spears pays homage to Madonna, Michael and Janet, whom she calls "the people I've grown up listening to and totally inspire [me]."

The promo doesn't just show the pop star's own musical icons; it also reminds us of what a musical force Spears is as well. "We are going to be exploring her past styles," Brightly said of Spears' classic looks. "In particular, past six styles that represent each of her albums, with the seventh one being the current incarnation."

Spears, whose outfit was designed to represent her current style, is dressed in a custom-made studded leather jacket, a shredded black T-shirt and her signature cutoff jean shorts. The promo begins with Spears paying homage to her latest album, Femme Fatale.

"I did the opening segment, where I'm at the mirror and I'm representing how many albums I've done, which is number seven," Spears said.

Spears then begins her journey down memory lane, where she is surrounded by dancers dressed up in some of her signature video looks, such as the flight-attendant costume in "Toxic" and her infamous red catsuit in "Oops! ... I Did It Again."

"I'm walking down a hallway and I'm seeing memorabilia of all my performances that I've done in the past," Spears said. "All my dancers are dressed up in my old outfits, which it's really cool."

What do you think of Britney's VMA promo? Let us know in the comments!

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Daniel Radcliffe's 'Woman In Black' Trailer: Seriously Creepy

'Harry Potter' vet's new horror-flick footage might be clichéd, but that doesn't mean it's not effective.
By Eric Ditzian and Josh Wigler

Daniel Radcliffe in "The Woman in Black"
Photo: Alliance Films

If the teaser trailer for Daniel Radcliffe's "The Woman in Black" surprised us in April with just how darn creepy it was (as opposed to the more thriller-driven supernatural story we were expecting), the new, full trailer has opened our eyes to the full, horror-heavy potential of the actor's first post-"Harry Potter" role.

Our eyes are open, sure, but they also closed, admittedly, once or six times, as we took in viewing after viewing of the footage in preparation for our latest trailer commentary. Hit "Play" on the video to watch along with us, and then read on for a deeper dive into the action, which begins with a seriously eerie silence.

From there, it must be said, the trailer incorporates a whole lot of familiar horror-movie tropes. The first is those creepy children. Not only do we get creepy kids, we get creepy kids delivering narration in rhymes. It might be clichéd, but that doesn't mean it's not effective. And it's good to see Radcliffe taking on material that truly forces him to step outside the Quidditch pitch.

Between "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" on Broadway, then "The Woman in Black" and fare like "All Quiet on the Western Front," the 22-year-old actor isn't shying away from less-poppy projects. That's all part of his plan: different material, no break after his decade-long "Potter" run.

"If I had been taking some time off and not doing stuff, I think the temptation in terms of the media and the public, to a certain extent, is [that] if you don't hear from a child star for a while, you can kind of condemn them to the been-and-gone pile," Radcliffe told MTV News in the spring. "I wanted to make sure that didn't happen."

We haven't, however, gotten to see much of his creative range in any of the "Woman in Black" trailers. What we have seen is that he's excellent at staring at things. In the new footage, he stares from carriages, out windows, in mansions, and just kind of longingly off into the distance. Perhaps Radcliffe has been taking some lessons from Derek Zoolander. Hey, if he can just stare at things for the next 20 years, he's guaranteed a career.

Halfway through the trailer, we find ourselves facing another horror movie cliché: bloody writing on the wall. Listen up, people! If you ever find bloody writing on a wall, get the hell out of there! If this moment occurs, say, 20 minutes into the movie, the entire thing should be 25 minutes long, with the last five minutes devoted to a single uncut shot of Radcliffe fleeing as fast as his little legs will take him.

Yet this literal writing-on-the-wall gives us the biggest — or, really, the only — peek into the film's plot, which the trailer, to its credit, doesn't deeply explore. Here's what we already know: Based on a 1983 novel by Susan Hill, the story follows Radcliffe's Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer dispatched to sort out a recently deceased client's affairs, only to discover the nearby town is haunted by the ghost of a scorned woman. So does the bloody writing relate to the past, scorn-producing events? To someone speaking from beyond the grave? Possibly to Radcliffe himself?

There are many different ways to interpret it. Many interpretations, yes, but only one conclusion: Run, Harry, run! But run, clearly, he does not do soon enough, as the trailer ends with Radcliffe coming dangerously close to a demonic-looking woman. Is this the woman in black? Well, it's a woman and she's wearing black. And she has those blacked-out eyes, a nod to a photo earlier in the trailer, featuring a family with scratched-out eyes. So, for now, we'll keep an open mind on everything except this: "Woman in Black" looks pretty damn scary.

Now, we'll open our eyes. Please excuse us while we go throw up.

Check out everything we've got on "The Woman in Black."

She definitely has a penchant for shopping, and earlier today (August 22) Pippa Middleton was spotted spending some dough in London, England.

Miss Middleton dropped by the boutiques of Kings Road to find some new duds, looking beautiful in a white jacket, peach dress, and mustard yellow handbag.

And it looks like Pippa?s Royal Wedding attire made quite an impression on Hollywood starlet Lindsay Lohan.

The ?Mean Girls? actress wore a white version of Middleton?s green Temperley gown to Kim Kardashian?s wedding on Saturday (August 20).

Fashion Goes Loony For Balloons

photo of balloon dress by daisy balloon

Right, so, artist Rie Hosokai makes gorgeous dresses out of—you guessed it—balloons. Hosokai, who goes by Daisy Balloon (of course), strings together hundreds of balloons into wearable art. You probably can't sit down in them, and the balloons lose their light, airy shape after 24 hours or so, but that hasn't stopped Rie from charging customers $2,000 to wear her creations. That sounds crazy, right? It's pretty insane. Also insane—the amount of detail, creativity and artistry Hosokai manages to produce in balloon form. She certainly puts the balloon animal guy at Bennigans to shame. Check out a few more photos, after the jump! [Fashion Indie]

Jennifer Garner Goes Bold in Blue to Talk The Odd Life of Timothy Green and Motherhood

Jennifer Garner charmed the audience at today's D23 Expo in Anaheim as she presented an early look at The Odd Life of Timothy Green. The movie, due in theaters in 2012, stars Jennifer and Joel Edgerton as a couple who learn they can't have children of their own. One night after getting the sad news, the pair crack open some red wine and start listing the qualities they'd hope for in a child, and their dream of being parents finds a strange way of coming true. Jennifer said: "I just fell for the story. I loved the magical element to it." She also told the crowd that, as a mom, she liked the message of valuing what's different about every kid. The Odd Life of Timothy Green was one of several films previewed at the Disney Expo this weekend. The studio also shared early footage from The Avengers and John Carter, which stars Friday Night Lights alum Taylor Kitsch. Pixar presented their 2012-2014 slate, Jason Segel stopped by to talk about The Muppets, and fans got a peek behind the scenes of Oz: the Great and Powerful. Oz is currently filming in Detroit, so James Franco and his costars couldn't make it to California for this weekend's festivities. Despite it, director Sam Raimi sent a video message and shared a look at James in costume filming a scene opposite Michelle Williams, who - along with Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis - plays one of the witches of Oz.

Lady Gaga And Bette Midler: A Real Mermaid Weighs In!

MTV News goes straight to the source to discuss recent pop-culture mermaid trends and beefs.
By Jocelyn Vena

Beyoncé declared her love for mermaids during her MTV special "The Year of 4," while Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Bette Midler have all dressed up like the mythical sea creatures onstage or in videos. Madonna has surrounded herself with mermen during a past tour, and mermaids also show up in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and in several new novels, including a forthcoming book by "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida is famous for its mermaid shows, so MTV News decided to go right to the source and get a real-deal mermaid on the phone. It's no surprise that "mermaid" Carli Goodworth told us it's officially the Year of the Mermaid.

"It used to be really popular, like, 60 years ago and everybody was all about mermaids, and now today, it's coming back again," Goodworth told MTV News. "The stars are starting to use it, and the people from outside are loving it, and hopefully it'll draw more people to our attraction as well."

So why are pop stars taking on mermaid alter egos? Goodworth said the public persona of mermaids has shifted from the cute and cuddly Disney version to the more accurate version of mermaids who are mysterious, dangerous and sexy.

And the mermaid trend hasn't been free from controversy: There has already been beef between fans of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, accusing the pop stars of lifting the idea, and then between Lady Gaga and Bette Midler, who did the mermaid-in-a-wheelchair routine decades before Gaga did.

"It's becoming so popular," Goodworth laughed about the mermaid beefs. "I think it's awesome. We're used to the few people around here, because we are known as the mermaid country, and it's neat to see all these other people battling it out to be the only mermaid. It's just different."

Being that Goodworth has performed as a mermaid for quite some time now, she's happy to see other people getting excited about it. "We love mermaids, so it's fun to see other people doing stuff with mermaids besides us," she said, adding her advice: "Be creative, do your own thing, really do your research."

What do you think about the pop-culture mermaid trend? Let us know in the comments!

Michael Jackson Family Announces Tribute Concert

Lineup for October show in Cardiff, Wales, will be revealed August 3.
By Gil Kaufman

Michael Jackson's family has announced a tribute concert to the late King of Pop that is slated to take place on October 8 in Cardiff, Wales. The four-hour show at the 75,000-capacity Millennium Stadium will be broadcast via satellite on pay-per-view and into movie theaters with a cast of big-name performers whose identities have not yet been revealed.

At the Beverly Hills press conference on Monday revealing the details of the "Michael Forever" show, Jackson family matriarch Katherine was joined by sons Tito, Jackie and Marlon and daughter LaToya; siblings Jermaine, Randy, Janet and estranged husband Joe were not in attendance.

"When I was told some of the names of the artists performing, I knew it would be fit for a king. If my son was here today he would feel the same way, and so I'd like to say thank you very much for helping to keep my son's legacy alive," Katherine Jackson said of Michael, who died in June 2009 of a heart attack caused by a prescription drug overdose.

According to Wales Online, the show will feature artists Jackson admired and will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the start of his solo career.

"I will be there along with as many members of my family that can make it," Katherine said. "It is intended to be the biggest and best concert in the world for many years to come." LaToya added, "This event is far, far overdue. He was an entertainer who I feel no one can ever stand up to or hold a candle to as far as his talent is concerned. This tribute will be something spectacular and I know that he would approve."

One of the show's producers said that despite taking place in a large stadium, the event will have a more intimate atmosphere with the building's roof closed. Proceeds from the show will benefit three charities Jackson supported: the Prince's Trust, AIDS Project Los Angeles and a cancer charity. The show's lineup will be announced on August 3.

As with many things related to MJ's legacy, there was controversy, as brothers Randy and Jermaine said they thought the timing of the show was inappropriate. In a statement, the two said, "While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honors our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death. As everyone knows, those proceedings commence September 20."

That date is when Jackson's former doctor, Conrad Murray, is slated to go on trial for manslaughter charges in the singer's death.

Jermaine attempted to put on a tribute concert to his late brother in September 2009, but the show fell apart after many of the top acts were unable to commit to the event.

Lady Gaga Strips Down, Plays Piano In VMA Promos

Gaga will appear live on MTV to make a VMA announcement Thursday at 7:49 p.m. ET/PT.
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga

It's a big week for Lady Gaga. After announcing she'd be performing at the 2011 Video Music Awards on Sunday, August 28, promos for the big show featuring the Mother Monster herself were unveiled, giving fans a very candid, stripped-down take on her latest single, "Yoü and I."

In one clip, Gaga proves that it is possible to remove your bra and play the piano at the same time. She then stands up from the piano, holding some strategically placed sheet music to stay suitable for TV. In a second promo, Gaga sits and croons the track, a jazz band backing her up.

"Sometimes I'm really happy and I write music, and sometimes I'm really angry and sometimes I'm really drunk or sometimes I'm super sober," she says in another promo about the impending big night. "You don't really know why or if or how you write music."

Find out how to win a trip to the VMAs courtesy of Foursquare and MTV!

Gaga will appear live Thursday at 7:49 p.m. ET/PT on MTV and Logo during "MTV First: Lady Gaga" to make a special #VMA announcement and celebrate the television premiere of her "Yoü and I" video, to be followed by a live Q&A on MTV.com. In addition to performing at the VMAs, Lady Gaga is nominated for four Moonmen, including Best Female Video ("Born This Way"), Best Art Direction ("Judas"), Best Choreography ("Judas") and Best Video With a Message ("Born This Way").

Fans can submit questions for Lady Gaga beginning Wednesday (August 17) through MTV.com and Twitter (@MTVNews, hashtag #MTVGaga).

Kreayshawn Gets NYC Crowd 'Bumpin'

Bay Area rapper was joined onstage by V-Nasty.
By Paul Cantor

NEW YORK — On Wednesday, while premiering their video for "Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" on MTV.com, the Red Hot Chili Peppers said they decided to scrap the version of the video that was originally directed by Bay Area rapper Kreayshawn — she of "Gucci Gucci" fame — and go with something that they felt was more "them." If the news caused any damage to the budding female MC's ego, it didn't show last night. She was warmly embraced by a Big Apple crowd at the Highline Ballroom, her first official performance in New York City.

Diminutive and wiry, Kreayshawn burst onto the stage at 10:45, after the audience was treated to opening sets by rappers Moe Green, Roach Gigz, Phony Ppl and finally, Smoke DZA. Despite the openers, the energy in the venue initially remained icy. It resembled something of a showcase, with people anxious to see if the controversial rapper — who's up for a Best New Artist award at the 2011 VMAs — could hold her own in front of a feisty and oft-critical New York audience. Speculation also abounded about whether or not her White Girl Mob counterpart V-Nasty would let loose with a barrage of N-words, as she's recently come under fire for doing.

Kreayshawn didn't seem swayed, though. Clad in a white Bathing Ape T-shirt, mom jeans and a colorful snapback cap, she squealed — often inaudibly, but not without a distinguishable melisma — over the backing vocal tracks of lesser-known cuts from her Kittys x Choppas mixtape ("Wavey"), and newer, unreleased material ("Left Eye"). Playful, petite and most of all, entertaining, she gingerly marauded from one end of the stage to the other.

The energy was turned up a notch, however, when V-Nasty took the stage. Donning a retro Charlotte Hornets cap, a plain white T-shirt and jeans, she tore into cuts from her Don't Bite Just Taste mixtape, and then played Thelma to Kreayshawn's Louise for the rest of the show.

The show's climax, however, came when Kreay explored her most popular tunes. The opening synth blurps of "Bumpin Bumpin" got the entire crowd's hands in the air, and then her DJ, Two Stacks, dropped the beat for "Gucci Gucci." The audience sang back each line to Kreayshawn, while a random person walked onstage and took a courageous stage dive.

"Why there only guys up here?" Kreayshawn questioned, as the beat was halted. "I need a bad bitch up here." Her request went unmet, but that didn't stop the crowd from singing the song a capella until its end. She parted the stage amidst a dance party, singing the lyrics to Alexander O'Neal's 1985 hit "Saturday Love." It was a fitting, celebratory close to a night on which New York finally gave one of hip-hop's most controversial new artists its nod of approval.

Jay-Z, Kanye Get To Work In Watch The Throne Studio Pics

Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams also appear in photos from the recording sessions.

Having one of the year's most anticipated albums means fans will eat up any morsel of new info they can get their hands on about its release. Via his Life + Times website, instead of an audio sneak peek, Jay-Z has revealed a visual look into the creation of Watch the Throne in the form of more than 20 photos taken during the recording of his collaborative album with Kanye West.

In the pictures, besides Yeezy and Hova, a number of celebrities are seen milling about as the two hip-hop stars were going about creating their album. Some of the familiar faces include rapper/producer Pharrell Williams and Jay-Z's wife, Beyoncé.

CHECK OUT EXCLUSIVE STUDIO PHOTOS.

In one particular photo, Kanye is seen looking down at a yellow pad that appears to have a track list for the album. Earlier this week, the official Watch the Throne track list was also revealed on Jigga's site.

Watch the Throne was recorded across a few continents, including Europe and Australia. At least some of the photos were taken in New York City's Mercer Hotel, where parts of the album were recorded and where Jay-Z held an exclusive listening session of the album last week for select media, including MTV News. During the same session, Jay also confirmed that part of the album was recorded at NYC's Tribeca Grand Hotel.

At the listening event, Jay-Z spoke about being in awe of the people who gathered around the room he was sitting in, much like the assembled journalists, while he and Kanye were creating songs. Some of the notables he remembered stopping by off the top of his head included Academy Award winner Russell Crowe, Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci, who designed the album-cover artwork, and heralded fashion designer Phoebe Philo.

Although the release date is still unconfirmed, Watch the Throne appears to be set to drop August 2.

What do you think of the studio pictures? Let us know in the comments!

Katy Perry, Adele And More 2011 VMA Nominees ... Possibly

Bigger Than the Sound tries to predict the nominees for this year's Video Music Awards.
By James Montgomery

Katy Perry
Photo: Amy Sussman/ Getty Images

I've been told that the nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards -- which air live Sunday, August 28, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV -- are going to be announced on MTV and MTV.com on Wednesday night (July 20) at 11 p.m ET, and that means you should probably get ready for a whole lot of Katy Perry. And Adele. And Britney Spears. And Lady Gaga. Oh, and Rihanna too.

That's because, to paraphrase Beyoncé (oh yeah, she'll probably get nominated too), it's been girls who've run the world in 2011, and the VMAs will probably be no exception. Perry — who has basically been unstoppable since last summer — figures to be the most nominated artist, with this year's breakout star, Adele, close behind. Britney, Gaga and all the rest figure to be in the hunt too. In fact, one has to wonder if the folks behind the show will just go ahead and eliminate the Best Male Video category altogether. More room for the ladies that way.

Of course, we won't know for sure until those nominations are officially revealed, but while we wait, I figured it was time to dust off the old Prognostication Cap and try to predict the 2011 VMA nominees in advance. I've done this for seemingly every awards show in the past, and sometimes I even manage to avoid embarrassing myself completely (not always, though).

So without any advance knowledge — and using as many sweeping generalizations as humanly possible — here are my picks for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Accuracy not entirely guaranteed.

Best Male Video
In a year dominated by females, I suppose someone has to win Best Male Video. I think it's a given that Bruno Mars, Chris Brown and Eminem all land nods here, and I suspect Justin Bieber will sneak in too, if only because it builds off his Best New Artist win last year. The fifth spot is up for grabs, though in a pinch, I'll go with Pitbull, if only because of the recent success of "Give Me Everything." Lupe Fiasco or Trey Songz are also viable choices. My picks:

» Bruno Mars, "Grenade"
» Chris Brown, "She Ain't You"
» Eminem feat. Rihanna, "Love The Way You Lie"
» Justin Bieber, "U Smile"
» Pitbull, "Give Me Everything"

Best Female Video
Sure, Video of the Year is the night's biggest award, but given the success of every artist with a pair of X chromosomes, the Best Female Video might be the toughest — and not just to win. Predicting who even gets nominated is a challenge, considering there are only five spots available. Adele and Katy Perry seem mortal locks, and Rihanna is close. Britney will probably earn a nom too, which means that either Beyoncé, Lady Gaga or Nicki Minaj will be left on the outside looking in. Told you this was going to be tough. My picks:

» Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
» Britney Spears, "Hold It Against Me"
» Beyoncé, "Run the World (Girls)"
» Katy Perry, "E.T."
» Rihanna, "S&M"

Best Rock Video
My official title at MTV News is "rock editor," but even I had a hard time coming up with five nominees here. Since 30 Seconds to Mars won last year, I suspect they'll be back to defend their crown. Folks were excited about the Foo Fighters' return, so pencil them in too. Mumford & Sons may very well be the year's most unexpected success, which should earn them a nod. The other two slots? I'm not gonna lie, I just picked names out of a hat.

» 30 Seconds to Mars, "Hurricane"
» Foo Fighters, "Rope"
» Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks"
» Linkin Park, "Waiting for the End"

Best Hip-Hop Video
A wide-open category, and one that raises several questions: Can Eminem win for the second year in a row? Will Nicki Minaj manage to bum-rush the boys' club? Is Kanye West's epic "Runaway" mini-movie even eligible? I'm not going to pretend to know all the answers, but it certainly makes for an interesting field. In the end, I left Em off — since "Love the Way You Lie" was released in such a nebulous time (August 2010, a month before last year's VMAs and a full 12 months before this year's) — and went with the Beastie Boys, since I have a creeping suspicion they'll earn a nod or two, and this seems as logical a place as any. Nicki and Kanye are in (though I went with the latter's "Monster" video), and so is Lil Wayne. For the last spot, I went with Lupe Fiasco, though it wouldn't surprise me to see Tyler, the Creator here instead.

» Beastie Boys, "Make Some Noise"
» Kanye West (featuring Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Bon Iver and Nicki Minaj), "Monster"
» Lil Wayne (featuring Cory Gunz), "6 Foot 7 Foot"
» Lupe Fiasco, "The Show Goes On"
» Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass"

Best Pop Video
Another big-time category, another bunch of deserving artists destined to be left out. I like Britney's, Katy's and Gaga's chances, and I'll toss Rihanna into the mix too. For the fifth spot, I went with Bruno Mars, since, otherwise, this category would basically just be Best Female Video, Part II. Of course, in doing that, I excluded Adele, Beyoncé, Ke$ha and about a dozen other worthy acts too. Prognostication is hard work, people.

» Britney Spears, "Hold It Against Me"
» Bruno Mars, "Grenade"
» Katy Perry, "E.T."
» Lady Gaga, "Born This Way"
» Rihanna, "S&M"

Best New Artist
Who will follow in the footsteps of Biebus Christ (and Lady Gaga) and take home the Moonman for Best New Artist? Good question! This is always one of the hardest categories to predict, and this year is no different: The only sure things seem to be Mumford & Sons and Wiz Khalifa, and though Robyn isn't exactly new, she's new enough here (and made some terrific strides over the past 12 months), so I think she's a lock. In a pinch, I'll pick Foster the People (big radio hit) and Tyler, the Creator (big buzz), though Kreayshawn could sneak in too.

» Foster the People
» Mumford & Sons
» Robyn
» Tyler, the Creator
» Wiz Khalifa

Video of the Year
Last year's Video of the Year race featured a trio of underdogs — 30 Seconds to Mars, B.o.B, Florence and the Machine — thrown into the mix. Will 2011 follow suit? Probably not. Adele seems to be a no-brainer, even if most folks have never seen the video for "Rolling in the Deep." Katy, too, but it remains to be seen which of her videos gets the nod. (I went with "Firework." It's mad inspirational.) Em will be back — though one has to wonder if "Love the Way You Lie" peaked too early to be considered a genuine front-runner — and Gaga should return also. I went dark-horse with my fifth pick, taking the Foo Fighters' "Rope" over bigger clips from Beyoncé and Rihanna, mostly because I've got a sweet spot for VHS.

» Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
» Eminem (featuring Rihanna), "Love the Way You Lie"
» Foo Fighters, "Rope"
» Katy Perry, "Firework"
» Lady Gaga, "Born This Way"

The Red Hot Chili Peppers At Mecca (Of The Western Sports World)

We drop in on the band during rehearsals at the iconic Forum and see parallels between the two, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

The Forum — the slightly decrepit, strangely Roman arena on the corner of Manchester and Prairie in Inglewood, California — first opened its doors on December 30, 1967, and has, in the years that followed, played host to both the "Showtime" Lakers and the Gretzky Kings, not to mention just about every L.A.-area concert you've ever heard of, or were too drunk to remember. Parts of Led Zeppelin's live How the West Was Won were recorded here, as were live albums by Cream, Steppenwolf, the Bee Gees and P-Funk, to name just a few.

Over the course of its existence, it's been known alternately as "the Fabulous Forum," "the Los Angeles Forum" (even though it's in Inglewood) and, in a move of corporate branding so subtle most locals didn't know the difference, "the Great Western Forum." Now, it's mostly just an oval located in the center of an asphalt ocean in a less-than-desirable part of town. The Lakers and the Kings bolted for the shiny new Staples Center in 1999, and the live shows dried up soon after. A church owned it until last year and now people just jog around it. It is a fate unbecoming of such a legendary venue, really — a slow decline into obsolescence and calisthenics — and yet, this is how these things tend to go.

Michael Balzary and Anthony Kiedis — the slightly graying yet strangely sculpted half of the Red Hot Chili Peppers — first opened their doors (or, you know, were born) on October 16 and November 1, 1962, respectively, and have, in the years that followed, arisen from the L.A. punk scene to achieve the kind of heights few in the music business can dare dream of: 65 million albums sold worldwide, nine Hot 100 singles in the U.S., and seven Grammy Awards, to name just a few. Over the course of their existence, the pair have been known as Flea and, well, Anthony (or maybe Sir Psycho Sexy). They have recorded some of the most celebrated albums of both the alt-rock heyday — namely, Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Magik, — and the uncertain times that followed (1999's Californication), and they most certainly do calisthenics. And yes, you can probably see where I'm going with this.

Because it's not exactly difficult to draw parallels between the three entities: The Forum, a grandiose (and somewhat gaudy) monument to '60s idealism and the excesses that followed, Flea and Kiedis the poster children for the decay that set in once that idealism gave way to cold hard fact, when those excesses devolved into plain old addictions. All three grew preternaturally old beneath the hazy sunshine of Southern California, and all three proudly wear the scars that came with that aging. They have each witnessed incredible highs and crushing lows, triumphs and tragedies, and they are all still standing. And because of that, both the arena and the Chili Peppers, which Flea and Kiedis formed in the obtuse shadow of the arena back in 1983, have become Los Angeles icons, the kind with pock marks on their faces and dirt beneath their fingernails; the real kind.

In fact, about the only difference between the Forum and the Peppers seems to be that the latter is still fully operational. Other than that, they belong to each other. And yet, it is perhaps due to nothing more than grand cosmic coincidence that the Peppers have chosen the Forum as the rehearsal spot for their upcoming world tour, a very big endeavor in support of their very big I'm With You, the first new Chili Peppers record in more than five years. Or at least that's what they told me on Wednesday when I stopped by to host the premiere of their brand-new "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" video.

"We just got the call to show up to the Forum for rehearsal and were like, 'Yes, that's a good place to do it!' " Kiedis said. "They needed space to goof around with our stage and our lights ... [but] I was warming up in one of the cavernous bowels of this beautiful institution, and I looked up and there was a great old photograph of [former Lakers' guard] Nick Van Exel, charging me with the ball, number nine, looking me down, big head, big heart, big eyes ... remember the time he got the ref?"

Of course, I got the feeling, based on the second part of that statement, that it wasn't mere coincidence that brought the Chili Peppers to the Forum, nor was it a love of Lakers ball (though, to be fair, Flea did point out that "This building is the home of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Byron Scott, Norm Nixon [and] many, many Bob McAdoos"). Instead, it was something much bigger; a love for the old building, or even a sense of purpose.

After all, the Forum was where they learned how to be musicians, much like the long lost Club Lingerie, the punk spot operated by the late Brendan Mullen, who is eulogized on I'm With You's "Brendan's Death Song." It is where they underwent several passages of manhood. In a way, they grew up here.

"The second rock show I ever saw here was with [Anthony]," Flea laughed, peering up at the vaulted ceiling. "We came in here to see the Who, we snuck in, and we snuck in to see Queen here, too."

"We used to not have any money was the thing, but we wanted to go to the shows," Kiedis smiled. "So we'd get right up to where they let you in at the turnstile, and we'd get down and go [through], and if they'd catch us, God bless 'em. But they never could."

So, in a sense, without the Forum, there probably would be no Red Hot Chili Peppers. Which is why they treat the place with such reverence, why, during rehearsals, they joined drummer Chad Smith and new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer to tear through old songs with a fury usually reserved for the actual live shows. It was almost as if they were paying tribute to the old ghosts that haunt the twisting corridors, or, more probably, to the bands that have brought the roof down over the past four-plus decades.

It was an amazing thing to watch, and I couldn't think of a more fitting setting. After all, the Forum and the Red Hot Chili Peppers share a bond much stronger than you could possibly imagine. They are both survivors. And to witness the band still operating at their peak, nearly 28 years after they first began, well, it somehow fills you with hope for the venerable old venue too. After all, the Forum deserves a comeback too, or at least a better fate than folks jogging around its perimeter. And maybe, in some small way, the Chili Peppers' rehearsals — buoyant, fun, funky and, most important of all, loud — can help breathe new life into the old place, to lift it up and set it back on its feet. You get the feeling Flea and Kiedis feel a sense of duty to try. After all, it's the least they could do.

Chris Cornell Filling In For Robert Plant On Led Zeppelin Tour? That's News To Him

'I have not been approached to fill in for Robert Plant on the Zeppelin tour, but that isn't to say I won't be,' singer says.
By Chris Harris

Former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell has spoken out for the first time about rumors that he's been asked to fill in for Robert Plant on a proposed Led Zeppelin reunion tour. The trek would feature original guitarist Jimmy Page, original bassist John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham taking over on drums for his late father, John Bonham.

Cornell has been mentioned — along with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, White Stripes mastermind Jack White and Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy — as a potential Plant fill-in. Plant has already said that he wouldn't take part in the tour.

"I have not been approached so far to fill in for Robert Plant on the upcoming Zeppelin tour, but that isn't to say I won't be," Cornell told MTV News. "I've heard that from about 200 people now, and it might be one of those situations where it's just an online rumor or it might be true. But if you see anyone from Led Zeppelin around, let me know. I think I should actually fill in for Jimmy Page on the Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss tour."

Cornell's denial comes just a day after Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford confirmed reports that frontman Steven Tyler recently met with Zeppelin for an impromptu jam session. "They did it for fun," Whitford said during an appearance on the syndicated show "Todd N Tyler Radio Empire." "I actually think Jimmy wanted Steven to come over and play a little bit because I think he was trying to light a fire under Robert."

Rumors of a Zeppelin reunion tour have abounded since the iconic band played a single reunion set last year at London's O2 Arena. Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider added fuel to the fire last month when he revealed that the group was thinking of touring, with or without Plant.

According to Snider, the rest of the band told Plant, " 'We're all rehearsed, we're ready to go. Here's a gazillion dollars on the table. If you don't do it, we're going out with this kid [Myles Kennedy].' "

"And he can sing the sh-- out of Zeppelin," Snider added. "They're going to hope that Robert, at the last minute, will go, 'OK,' and step in."

In a recent interview, Jones told BBC Radio Devon that a new singer was being sought to take over for Plant. "We are trying out a couple of singers," he said. "We want to do it. It's sounding great, and we want to get on and get out there."

But Jones insists that he, Page and Bonham aren't interested in finding a Plant clone. "It's got to be right," he said. "There's no point in just finding another Robert. You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don't want to be our own tribute band. There would be a record and a tour, but everyone has to be onboard."

Of course, even if Zeppelin were to approach him, Cornell might be too busy to take over vocals for the band. His upcoming Timbaland-produced solo LP, Scream, will be released within the next few months. Cornell told MTV News last month that some of his fans might consider Scream something of a departure, but he doesn't see it that way.

"It makes me happy that there's this perception that I have a group of fans that I'm now sort of throwing a curve at and what their reaction will be," he said. "But I've been in this situation so many times already. When I put out [1999's] Euphoria Morning, my main goal was to create an album that sounded like nothing I'd done in Soundgarden, and I did that. I also had that with Temple of the Dog, where I showed up with songs that weren't necessarily riff-based. And then, of course, the pairing of me and members of Rage Against the Machine had everyone sort of speculating about what that would sound like.

"It feels like I've done this so many times that when it's presented to me as being a departure, I feel that's a misconception," he added. "I feel like that's my theme at this point."

Leonardo DiCaprio 'J. Edgar' Photos Released

Photos depict a serious DiCaprio as the first-ever FBI director along with Naomi Watts as his longtime secretary Helen Gandy.

Warner Bros. has finally unveiled photos of Leonardo DiCaprio as their titular "J. Edgar" Hoover.

The first images of the upcoming drama have hit the Internet and showcase both DiCaprio as the first director of the FBI and Naomi Watts as Helen Gandy, Hoover's longtime secretary. Dicaprio's Hoover looks a bit stressed in these pictures. The Dustin Lance Black-written script tells the story of Hoover's public and private lives.

Clint Eastwood is continuing his trend of directing historical biopics with "J. Edgar." First with the two-parter "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima," and later with "Invictus," Eastwood has tried to capture the feel of specific times in history through the eyes of specific well-known historical figures. "J. Edgar" will delve into the controversial life of the FBI's first director, including his 48 years at the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, his alleged closeted homosexuality, and the accusations that he misused his power for political purposes.

"J. Edgar" has a star-studded cast in addition to DiCaprio and Watts. Armie Hammer stars as Clyde Tolson, Hoover's protégé and alleged lover. Judi Dench plays Hoover's mother, Anne Marie Hoover.

Ed Westwick is playing Agent Smith, an FBI agent tasked with ghost-writing Hoover's autobiography. Josh Lucas is famous aviator Charles Lindbergh, whose son's infamous kidnapping played a pivotal role in the development of the FBI. Jeffrey Donovan plays Robert F. Kennedy, and Ken Howard is U.S. Attorney General Harlan F. Stone.

"Working with Clint Eastwood, that guy's an icon," Hammer said about the role when MTV News caught up with him at the 2011 Oscars. "Honestly, he is like the nicest, quietest, sweetest man, but he'll get excited about things, and then he'll call 'Cut!' like Dirty Harry."

Check out everything we've got on "J. Edgar."

Zsa Zsa Gabor Watches Wedding Anniversary Party from Bed

Zsa Zsa Gabor Watches Wedding Anniversary Party from Bed

Zsa Zsa Gabor and her ninth husband Frederic Prinz von Anhalt celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Aug. 14 -- and von Anhalt, 68, commemorated the occasion by renting a giant billboard on Sunset Boulevard and by throwing his 94-year-old wife an elaborate red-carpet bash at their Bel Air, Calif., home on Sunday. Sounds innocent enough, but von Anhalt has been criticized for the party -- which was attended by such celebrities as Phyllis Diller, Frank Stallone and Quincy Jones -- because Gabor is in such poor health that she was forced to watch from bed.

Gabor has been in and out of the hospital in recent months, had her leg partially amputated in January, and suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed and barely able to speak.

"People attack me for this and say, 'How can you do it for a sick woman?'" von Anhalt says in a video posted on his Facebook page. "Look, my wife is 94 years old. She should have everything she wants and should have everything large. This big party is not for the guests, not for the media, not for me -- this big party is for Zsa Zsa."

Still, the party was for von Anhalt, too -- and he admits as much. "It's 25 years of marriage. Twenty-five years of marriage here in Hollywood is a big thing. It's 25 years with Zsa Zsa Gabor, it's a big thing, it's a huge thing, and I made it," he enthuses. "So many husbands didn't make it -- they only made it a year or two. I made it 25 years, so I must have done something right.

One other point of controversy stemming from the party was the fact that von Anhalt said the cake would be provided by Spago. But Spago shot down those claims on Friday, citing the ongoing feud between von Anhalt and Gabor's daughter Francesca Hilton (her father is Gabor's second husband, hotel magnate Conrad Hilton). "Spago is neither providing a cake or any cuisine for this event whatsoever," the restaurant's founder and co-owner Barbara Lazaroff said in a statement. "I fully support Zsa Zsa’s daughter Francesca Hilton in her quest to have visitation rights to see her mother and to receive independent evaluation of Zsa Zsa’s mental and physical health."

This isn't the first time von Anhalt has stirred up controversy. He drew criticism back in April when he told CNN that he wanted Zsa Zsa to be a mother again, and so he had begun the arduous process of matching an egg-donor and looking for a surrogate.

Despite rampant criticism, von Anhalt is a vigorous defender of his right to choose what is best for his own wife. He said in an interview with Joy Behar, "It's nobody's business if I deliver sperm, it's nobody's business how I got off at the sperm bank... It's my life, and that's it!"
